The Lemosho Route is the most scenic trail on Kilimanjaro, offering panoramic vistas from multiple sides of the mountain. Due to the ideal balance of limited trekkers, beautiful scenery and a high summit success rate, this is our preferred route. You will begin with a drive from Moshi to the Londorossi Gate, which approaches the mountain from the west. The first two days of your trek you will cross the Shira Plateau from west to east, which is a relatively flat hike. As you approach Lava Tower, this route joins the Machame route. You will traverse underneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field on a path known as the Southern Circuit and will begin your summit climb from the Barafu Camp. The descent will be via the Mweka Route.

Day 1: Londorossi Gate (2360m) – Mti Mkubwa Camp (2810m)

After breakfast at your hotel, you will begin your adventure with a two-hour drive to the Londorossi Park Gate (2100m). As the guides and porters prepare and pack the supplies, you will get registered into the park. Your trekking will begin through the rainforest and you will camp at 2810m for your first night’s camp.

  • Walking distance: 6 km, 3-4 hrs
  • All meals are included (breakfast this day not included in budget package)

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa camp (2810m) – Shira 2 camp (3505m)

As you depart MtiMkubwa, you will travel through the Heath and Moorland Zone. Following the Shira Ridge, you will enter the vast high-altitude desert plateau as the first views of Mount Kilimanjaro unfold on the horizon.

  • Walking Distance: 8 km, 6-8 hrs
  • All meals are included

Day 3: Shira camp 2 (3505m) -Barranco camp(3950m)

As your route turns east, you will be in the semi-desert and rocky landscape that surrounds Lava Tower. You will first head to Moir camp, which is nestled near enormous beds of volcanic rock and surrounded by rocky hills and cliffs. To aid with your acclimatization, you will hike to the base of Lava Tower at 4500M. Following a short rest, you will descend through the Senecio Forest passing beautiful waterfalls. The BarrancoCamp is set in the shadow of the massive BarrancoWall, with easterly breezes often carrying misty clouds from the Barranco Valley.

  • Trekking time: 7 – 9 hrs
  • All meals are included

Day 4: Barranco Camp(3950m) – Karanga Camp(3995m)

Today’s challenge will be trekking the 150M face of the BarrancoWall. As you scramble over this wall face, you will gain a great appreciation for the work performed by the porters each day, and will arrive at camp for a well-deserved dinner and rest.

  • Walking distance: 3-5hrs, 5km
  • All meals are included

Day 5: Karanga Camp(3995m) – Barafu Camp(4600m)

Your morning trek will be a slow and steady uphill hike as you enter into the Arctic Zone. As the temperatures become cooler, the excitement will fill the camp as you make final preparations for the summit day ahead.

  • Walking distance: 3-5hrs, 4km
  • All meals are included

Day 6: Summit attempt, Barafu Camp (4600m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Mweka Camp (3100m)

This is the day for which you have prepared; your greatest trekking challenge and most rewarding moment. You will receive an early wake up call for preparation and a light breakfast before beginning your summit trek at 0100 Hours. Spectacular views coupled with the amazing sunrise will warm your soul and strengthen your spirit, as the iconic Uhuru Peak comes into view. After your well-earned summit accomplishment, you will descend to Barafu Camp for a break and celebration before continuing to Mweka Camp.
